7 Bible Verses That Prove Jesus Is God

The Bible never uses the phrase “Jesus is God,” yet it repeatedly presents Him as divine. Throughout Scripture, Jesus is called “God,” receives worship, and claims eternal authority. These passages, within their full context, reveal His true identity.

1. John 1:1 – “The Word Was God”

Scripture: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Context: John opens his Gospel identifying Jesus (the Word) as both distinct from and fully one with God from before creation.

2. John 20:28 – Thomas' Worship

Scripture: Thomas exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!”

Context: After doubting Jesus’ resurrection, Thomas addressed Him directly, affirming Jesus’ divinity—with no rebuke. This is the only time the word God (theos) is applied to Jesus by a disciple in Scripture.

3. Matthew 1:23 – Immanuel, “God with Us”

Scripture: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive... and they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us.)”

Context: Quoting Isaiah, Matthew applies the name Immanuel to Jesus, affirming the Word made flesh truly embodies God’s presence.

4. Romans 9:5 – The “God over All”

Scripture: Jesus is called “God over all, blessed forever.”

Context: Paul, tracing Israel’s promises, includes Christ among Israel’s patriarchs, affirming His divine role—clearly calling Jesus “God”.

5. Titus 2:13 – Our Great God and Savior

Scripture: Believers await “the appearance of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Context: Paul links Jesus with God Himself, presenting Him as both Redeemer and divine Lord in Christian hope.

6. Hebrews 1:8 – The Father Addresses the Son as God

Scripture: “About the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.’”

Context: Quoting Psalm 45, God the Father directly calls the Son “God,” affirming His divine and eternal nature.

7. Colossians 2:9 – Fullness of Deity in Christ

Scripture: “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.”

Context: Addressing false teachings, Paul emphasizes that Christ is not just a messenger but God Himself in flesh, fully possessing divine nature.

Bonus: Early Christian Worship & Prayer

Early believers prayed to Jesus (Acts 7:59, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit”), worshipped Him (Phil. 2:10–11), and built altars (Revelation 5:8–13). The Megiddo mosaic (c. 230 AD) even reads “to God Jesus Christ,” revealing early worship as Lord and God.

Conclusion

These seven (plus bonus) passages don’t simply hint—they unmistakably present Jesus as God. From eternity past to the worship He receives, Scripture and early Christian practice affirm His divine identity. When we confess “Jesus is Lord,” we affirm the core of Christian truth: He is truly God.
