What Does the Bible Say About Homosexuality?
Share
Introduction
In today’s culture, questions surrounding homosexuality are frequent and often divisive. But as followers of Christ, we look to the Bible as our final authority—not culture or opinion. This blog offers a scriptural exploration of what the Bible says about homosexuality, with truth, clarity, and compassion.
1. God's Design for Human Sexuality
Genesis 2:24 — “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”
This verse establishes God’s design: one man and one woman in covenant marriage. Jesus reaffirms this in Matthew 19:4-5, showing that God’s standard has not changed.
2. Homosexual Behavior in the Old Testament
Leviticus 18:22 — “Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.”
This moral command reflects God's unchanging standard. It is not limited to ancient Israel but applies to all humanity in light of God's holiness and design.
3. Homosexual Behavior in the New Testament
Romans 1:26-27 — “Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.”
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 lists homosexual behavior among other sins. Yet verse 11 gives great hope:
1 Corinthians 6:11 — “And that is what some of you were. But you were washed... justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.”
4. The Bible Condemns Acts, Not People
God’s Word clearly condemns the behavior, not the person. All people, regardless of their struggles, are loved by God and invited to receive the free gift salvation.
John 3:17 — “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
Conclusion: Can Homosexuals Be Saved?
It is important to understand that salvation is by faith in Jesus Christ alone—not by our ability to overcome every sin in our lives. Just as a heterosexual person who struggles with sins like adultery can still be eternally saved through faith in Christ, so can someone who struggles with or is engaged in homosexual behavior. If they have genuinely believed in the gospel—that Jesus died for their sins, was buried, and rose again—they are saved eternally, not because of their performance, but because of Christ’s finished work. They may face God’s discipline in this life, just as any believer would for walking contrary to His will, but that chastisement is a mark of His love—not a revocation of salvation. As Hebrews 12:6 says, “The Lord disciplines the one he loves.” Eternal life is a gift, not a reward for good behavior, and no sin is greater than the power of the cross
The Bible teaches that homosexual acts are sinful, but it also teaches that Jesus saves all who come to Him in faith. We are to speak truth and the Good News.
Ephesians 4:15 — “Speak the truth in love…”
