How to Learn More About God: Through Scripture, Prayer, and Trusting Him in Every Season

Introduction: Seeking to Know God Personally

The most important relationship you will ever have is with God. But how do you truly come to know Him— not just know about Him, but walk with Him in confidence, faith, and love? The Bible offers clear guidance: we learn more about God by reading His Word, spending time with Him in prayer, and trusting Him in every circumstance.

This journey is not about performance or trying to earn God’s favor. It’s about growing in the knowledge of who He is, how He loves, and what it means to follow Him.

1. Know God Through His Word

The Bible is God’s written revelation to us. It reveals His character, His promises, and His plan of redemption through Jesus Christ.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”
— 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV)
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
— Psalm 119:105 (NIV)

Start by reading the Gospels to know Jesus, who is the exact image of God (Hebrews 1:3). Read the Psalms for comfort and the letters of Paul for practical wisdom. As you read, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand and apply what you learn.

2. Talk to God Through Prayer

Prayer isn’t a ritual—it’s a relationship. It’s how we communicate with God and grow closer to Him. Through prayer, we bring our hearts, questions, gratitude, and needs to the Father.

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”
— Jeremiah 33:3 (NIV)
“Pray continually.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NIV)

God wants your honesty, not perfection. Prayer includes praise, confession, thanksgiving, and asking for help (Philippians 4:6–7). Sometimes, simply sitting quietly before Him speaks volumes.

3. Trust Him in Every Situation

The more we trust God through life’s ups and downs, the more we experience His faithfulness. Every trial is an opportunity to lean on Him more fully.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
— Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV)
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
— Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Faith grows when we choose to depend on God even when the answers aren’t clear. Through trust, we learn His ways and know His heart.

4. Walk With Others Who Know God

God often reveals more of Himself through other believers. Join a Christ-centered community, study the Word together, and learn from mature Christians who can walk with you in faith.

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
— Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)
“Let us not give up meeting together… but encouraging one another…”
— Hebrews 10:25 (NIV)

Surround yourself with people who will point you toward Christ and strengthen your walk.

Final Thoughts: God Wants to Be Known

God desires for us to know Him deeply—not just theologically, but relationally. Through Scripture, prayer, and daily trust, we grow in our knowledge of His love, truth, and presence.

“Come near to God and he will come near to you.”
